THE LEGENDARY "BAND VAN"

Just looking for a bit off advice guys and maybe see what other options are avail.

Anyway, we are nowin the situation where we have far too much gear to fit in our 2 cars (bass player still can't drive...yet).
Anyway, we've sort of talked about the possibility of buying an old Ford Transit or something just to get us to gigs and save us having to make 2 or 3 trips each to the venue.

Bottom line is, I could probably pick up a Ford Tranny for £300 - £400, but would it be worth it by the time we take into account insurance, road tax and MOT for something that is only going to get used a couple of times a month.

I for one couldn't afford to keep it myself, but if we don't get the gigs, then I would end up having to fork out myself.

On the other hand, I don't fancy paying £100 a time to hire one, that pretty much uses up most of the money we would get from the gig.

Interested to hear what you guys think and how you got around this problem.

Thx

Scott

I persuaded the wife that the family needed a HUGE people carrier- we clearly didn't but now I have the van I need!!

Also- Sack the worst member of your band and hire someone with a van!!!

# Posted by The Fabulous Eggs - 29/04/2008, 12:09 (GMT)
Also!! Soz- another point though...

£100 is a bit steep to hire a van _ I hire one over night a couple of months ago for £30= back street garage I had to use my own insurance and leave a £100 deposit- but got it all back

Ring round £100 is steeper than a steep thing in a steep thing competition!!!!!

Steeper than Steeper McSteep from Steepsville

Ha Ha, I used to have a people carrier but the wife told me to get it to ****

I have an idea, I'll change my Singer wanted blog, to say, "don't give a toss what you look or sound like, if you have a van, you're in" :D

Just a thought, how bout sticking a towbar on your motor, and getting/building a box trailer. That's what I did. Got a cheap trailer chassis off e-bay (£60) then built big box on it with bits from B&Q, less than £200 all in, no tax, no mot, no insurance worries. Get all the pa, guitar amps and cabs and lights in it. Just means the drummer has to use his car for his stuff. But there again that could be an advantage. I mean, do you really want to sit in the same motor as a drummer?

# Posted by Without Reason - 29/04/2008, 13:02 (GMT)
Very true, no-one wants to be in the car with a drummer.
I have one slight problem...I am the drummer LOL so I'm pretty much screwed on that front hee hee

As for the trailer, that's an option I hadn't thought of. Will look into it.
thanks for that.

Scott

Damn, have you seen how much road tax will be on a people carrier in 2010? they are talking well over £500. That option is closed to me :-(

# Posted by Without Reason - 30/04/2008, 18:54 (GMT)
And they reckon by the summer, it's gonna cost about £80 to fill the average family car with fuel.

It's a complete joke, think I'll just jack my job in, then I can be a dole bludger, get all my bills paid and not have to worry about travelling to work everyday. lol

# Posted by Threefold - 30/04/2008, 20:55 (GMT)
roll on summer we will all be on the dole playing gigs in the parks ,power cuts, drinking homebrew coz we cant buy the real stuff just like it used to be in the seventies .!!!!!LOL.

One day a drummer sick of all of the "stupid drummer" jokes decided to change instruments. So he went to the local music store and said that he wanted to learn a new instrument. The store owner cheerfully replied ok and asked what he would be interested in playing. After looking around the shop he said I'll try those things over there, pointing to the accordion section.
After looking through the accordions from over an hour the shop keeper said, "Have you found what you looking for?"

The drummer replied, "Yes, I'll take that big red one over there."

The store keeper smiled and and stared laughing. When the drummer asked why he was laughing the store keeper replied, "Are you a drummer, son?"

"Yeah!" replied the drummer.

"Well that big red thing is a radiator"

Trailer option is the best option. Bags of advertising space on the sides as well.
Whats with bashing drummers guys? We ain't so bad y'know.

drummer tuned down a string on the bass players guitar and refused to tell him which one.
How do you get a bass player off your doorstep?
Pay for the pizza.
NWB should we have a section for silly stuff?

Have you looked at getting a local company Auto repairs/garage/transport sponsor you. One band I know used to have the free use of a van ( plastered in the companies advertising) was considered a cheap form of advertising for them as well as a handy remedy for the lads.
