for me it was this one-"the vanilla fudge" with "you keep me hanging on". the one of the songs that led me down the path to ROCK!! when i first heard this, after the usual sixties style lightweight stuff--- whoa!!
when one thinks--this was in 1967-way ahead of it's time, was it not? and not in a bad way.

lmho! yeah-although some "purists" would hang us for saying so!! healey's version of "w m g w" is awesome!! may he have packed gigs, hot groupies and generous promoters.

Ghostbusters by Xentrix lol

# Posted by Keef - 28/05/2008, 14:10 (GMT)
Manfred Manns Blinded by the light.Left the Springsteen original way behind. But there again I am a keyboard junkie!!

Thought Dylans All along the watchtower from Hendrix was awesome

re: fab eggs-"Since Yoove Bin gone The Fabulous Eggs- Mrs NWB will agree with me on this!!!"- tut tut fab eggs!!- "since yoove bin gone" is an original, by fab eggs? unless you know someone else who's covered THAT tune? (i've "googled" it and couldn't find??) ;-)))))
re:without reason- heh heh!! :-)) (errrr-who did the original??)
re: keef- yeah!! they been playing it on "rock fm", full version. superb cover!! :-)) watchtower, hendrix style, ROCKS!! (more blasphemy-dylan can't sing!!!)

might think of another later, but up to now, 'Livin La Vida Loca' by The Toy Dolls
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aBQAj5CBMGo

# Posted by viking - 28/05/2008, 21:25 (GMT)
heh heh ! yep! knocks the original for six (mind you-is that saying much? pretentious? soi? ohhh yes!!) (sounds a bit like "you tube ken" doing his "bon scott impression", too!!) :-)))

# Posted by Steve Slinger - 28/05/2008, 22:22 (GMT)
Baker Street - Foo Fighters - awesome.
Phoenix are doing a good take on this also, funnily enough!

# Posted by The Fabulous Eggs - 28/05/2008, 22:22 (GMT)
since yoove bin gone is the fab eggs version of the rainbow classic as mrs NWB will confirm!!

# Posted by Without Reason - 29/05/2008, 08:32 (GMT)
ha ha, the toy dolls version of living la vida loca is brilliant :)

re:viking : Ray Parker Jnr done the original Ghostbusters

# Posted by Keef - 29/05/2008, 13:41 (GMT)
hocus pocus- focus originally but ramped up by three fold. Brings the house down whenever they play it. Don't know of any other bands doing it. Could it be the yodeling? The band cheat a little and get Luis the Spanish born bass player do it in his native tongue lol

# Posted by Sandwich Slayer - 29/05/2008, 18:14 (GMT)
Another favourite cover is 'Walk On By' by The Stranglers. There have been a lot of great covers over the years, someone said to me today, a cover is never as good as the original but I can think of a lot that have improved on the original.

# Posted by viking - 29/05/2008, 20:35 (GMT)
heh heh!! fab eggs-i always take the opinion of a woman who wears a basque at bus stations with a LARGE dose of salt!! :-P i've heard "s y b g" by fab eggs-damn fine tune, however, i doubt mr blackmore would be able to claim royalties from it?? :-))
keef-i bet luis has to wear his "size too small" trousers to make that one work? :-) (btw-"hocus pocus" rocks!!)
steve slinger-just watched it-hell yeah!!! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=axdBNCovYBc)
without reason-thanks!! :-))
sandwich slayer-absolutely, as evidenced by "vanilla fudge" et al??
another seminal cover that comes to mind, from way back when, is "river deep, mountain high" by deep purple. if memory serves me correctly, was on the "b" side of "hush" when it was first released. excellent stuff-the original by ike and tina is very good, but this one ROCKS!!!!!

# Posted by The Fabulous Eggs - 29/05/2008, 23:31 (GMT)
I dont see the point of recording an exact cover- make it your own!!

# Posted by Keef - 30/05/2008, 11:03 (GMT)
Spot on FE.

Tribute bands for obvious reasons will want to faithfully replicate a song, however covers bands should always consider using the original lyrics, riffs and melody and rework them to suit their style.

Nuther good cover ( in my most humble opinion) is Judas Priests Green Manalishi

Hey Viking- Not sure about the trousers, but he is recognisable by the three adams apples and the pained expression after pocus.

# Posted by FatMan:StarJumps - 30/05/2008, 17:48 (GMT)
All Along The Watchtower - Jimmy Hendrix completely stripped the song bare and made it his own... Go Jimmy!

# Posted by viking - 30/05/2008, 18:25 (GMT)
fab eggs-full kudos to you on that one-is a good tune you play there. however-you will, of course, understand my reluctance to take "second opinion" off someone who is so open to blackmail??? :-))
keef-agreed- to a point? out on bail's comment re rolf harris had, joking aside, some merit? was refreshing to hear such a venerated song done as only rolf can? some musos/fans take things a bit TOO seriously, which, i reckon, defeats the whole point of being involved in music-no fun?? on the other hand, there are, in my opinion, certain songs that should, not through "blind allegiance" to the artist, but simply beacause the song merits it, be sung/played pretty much as is otherwise it can lose the qualities that made them a damn good song in the first place?? of course, that is a personal value judgement to be taken by the band members, but does hold for from the fans point of view as well?

# Posted by Keef - 30/05/2008, 18:55 (GMT)
Well said Viking.
tis all about having fun after all is said and done.
Will have to concede on the fact that some tunes should never ever be re-arranged. Zeps stairway and AC/DC's Rosie being just two numbers that would whip the crowds up into a mad angry frenzy if you mucked em about.
Auditioned a singer last year that honestly believed Rolf(Can you tell what it is yet) Harris's version of stairway was covered by the mighty Zep

keef-"Will have to concede on the fact that some tunes should never ever be re-arranged. Zeps stairway and AC/DC's Rosie being just two numbers that would whip the crowds up into a mad angry frenzy if you mucked em about." -
errr- yeah!! last year had a cd of "hayseed dixie" doing ac/dc and motorhead (blame sandwich slayer!!). had most of the classic ac/dc numbers on, done "bluegrass" style!! i thought it was hilarious, however, gave a copy to some of the "crew", avid dc fans. they were NOT impressed!! "f*ck off" and "you're taking the p*ss!" were two of the more printable comments they made. they were seriously not amused!! how dare i ??!! good job we were long time friends, otherwise i think THIS viking was going to valhalla sooner than planned!! but, come on!!! if a song can't stand to have a bit of alternative interpretation then it ain't that great a song to start with??
roflmao! at the "singer" episode!! :-D

by the way-heard another excellent cover today on "rock fm"--"c'mon feel the noize", done by "quiet riot"--damn good!! even sounds a bit like noddy first couple of verses!!

# Posted by Threefold - 30/05/2008, 20:40 (GMT)
We do that version and it rocks the crowd no end.

# Posted by Threefold - 30/05/2008, 20:42 (GMT)

# Posted by Keef - 01/06/2008, 13:46 (GMT)
Hey there BC, Was listening to that one only the other day and thinking it would be worthy of inclusion on a set list.

# Posted by viking - 02/07/2008, 18:37 (GMT)
listening to rock radio today, was reminded that there is a magnificent cover out there that i'd overlooked, better than the original, even, i would say.....
"with a little help from my friends"-Joe Cocker, especially with mad dogs and englishmen backing him??? his live performance of the song at woodstock is AWESOME!!! :-))

# Posted by Anthem - 02/07/2008, 19:20 (GMT)
how about 'baby please don't go' by AC/DC? Saw them do that one in '79......truly breathtaking, pretty sure it's on the OZ version of high voltage too.

# Posted by viking - 02/07/2008, 20:04 (GMT)
